  1. The Ohio Center for Autism and Low Incidence (OCALI) is offering Autism Navigator for Primary Care training.  There are 10 FREE seats available for primary care providers that can be used over the coming year to access the web-based courses.  The training provides up to 8 hours of CME.

  2. Epic Link Tips

    1. Have you viewed the HOME page in Epic Link? The HOME page contains ‘Quick Links’ with several short videos (and PDF’s) to help navigate and use the system efficiently.  New tools are found there. Check it out!

    2. Did you know there is an overview of Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) available in Epic Link? Cincinnati Children’s is administering risk assessments which populate 10 SDoH including food insecurity, transportation, mental health, etc. The assessment scores create a color-coded visual (wheel) that can be viewed in the Longitudinal Plan of Care tab or the Plan of Care tab.  

    3. To discontinue/cancel an order in Epic Link, use the Order Review tab and click on Cancel Orders. See visual here.

  3. The platform for GC/Cx testing is being updated which means current swab (Aptima) will be phased out effective April 1, 2024. New swabs (Xpert Swab kit) can be ordered using PS# 132264. The discontinued Aptima swab will be accepted but will be sent to an outside lab which may delay results. View Swab Reference resource.

  10. Infectious Disease, ENT and community practice leaders have developed a clinical update for Group A Strep Pharyngitis outlining testing and treatment of both primary and recurrent GAS infections.

  11. Cincinnati Children’s created a new standardized screening process for suicide risk in adolescents.  The two-tiered process uses the National Institute of Mental Health’s (NIMH) ASQ screening tool and, if positive, can be followed up with the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS).  Details about the research and planned Epic enhancements found HERE.

  12. Cincinnati Children’s COVID-19 MIS-C Algorithm (dated May 12, 2023).

  13. The Emergency Dept (ED) created an algorithm for positive blood cultures to guide clinical decision-making for patients who have a positive blood culture after being discharged from the ED. 

  14. Have a non-urgent question for HVMC (Hemangioma and Vascular Malformation Center)?  You can use the E-consult system to send a question to them via Hematology. The job aid has been updated to reflect the change.

  15. Dermatology has developed a Triage Algorithm to provide visibility to how referrals flow through the department.  They will continue to use details from the referral sent to inform the scheduling priority.  A letter from Dr Marathe highlights referral details and upcoming faculty additions.

  16. Ohio Dept of Health (ODH) added screening for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) and X-linked Adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) to the Newborn Screening Panel (October 2022). This newborn screening document details both conditions. ODH recommends a referral to both Genetics AND Neurology within 2-5 days of a positive SMA screen and a referral to Genetics within 3 weeks of a positive X-ALD screen.

PRACTICE resources

  1. Community Medical Staff - Did you know you have access to Cincinnati Children’s Epic system via Haiku? Access the job aid to learn how to load Haiku onto your mobile phone.

  2. Effective Jan 1, 2024, a new add-on CPT code G2211 was put in place. The new code accounts for the complexity of taking care of patients in the primary medical home and can be used for all ill visits (acute or chronic) and mental health visits. It cannot be used with check-up or modifier 25 coded ill visits. Ohio AAP will be advocating for payment of this code, but it is not currently reimbursed by Ohio Medicaid.   11. The Division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics has important changes regarding referrals for children aged 6-12 years, effective 9/20. View the referral update from division director, Tanya Froehlich, MD, MS. Please consider these alternative options for evaluations and supports for patients in this age group.

  12. The Division of Psychiatry offers a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) which provides day-treatment for children and teens to improve management of:  School anxiety, emotions, behavior problems, and issues related to mental illness. Referrals can be made directly to the division (bypassing PIRC). PHP treatment is available at Green Township and our Norwood location. The admission/exclusion criteria can be used as a reference.

  13. Cincinnati Children’s is preparing for the respiratory illness season by reminding employees of our 3-tiered precaution system. The tiers are based on respiratory illness prevalence/spread in the region and within the hospital. View rationale for each tier.

  14.   15. Cincinnati Children’s has noticed a recent uptick in positive results for Lyme Disease.  There are several resources on Lyme Disease that you might find helpful to your practice. 

    1. For providers:  ODH surveillance data and the latest data for zoonoses (OH 2019). Additionally, a 2-page Lyme Disease Update was created in collaboration with Infectious Disease faculty. The document covers topics on clinical manifestations, differential dx, diagnostic testing, and treatment. The Division of Infectious Diseases also created a 1-page guide to tick removal in an ambulatory setting.

    2. For families:  Educational resources and a blog post from Infectious Diseases created in 2022.

  16. The Peri-op team created a 1-page resource that outlines factors that could contribute to surgical cancelations/rescheduling. The pre-anesthesia resource includes information related to recent illness, chronic conditions, medications and more.

  17. Did you know you can upload documents (or pictures) to a patient chart in Epic Link? That process complements the E-consult system when additional documentation is pertinent to your clinical question. Uploading details and the E-consult FAQ are available to you. Reminder:  E-consult communication is visible to MyChart users.

  18. Although the Hypermobility Clinic is closed to new referrals, OT/PT is still taking referrals for joint stability and strengthening for hyper mobile patients.  E-consult is also available for any non-urgent questions.  We are actively recruiting and in the interim, have compiled a resource list that includes materials for providers and families.

  19. OhioRISE provides specialized managed care for Ohio Medicaid children who have complex behavioral health or multiple system needs. If your practice accepts Medicaid insurance, this will impact you and the youth you serve. Find out what you need to know HERE.
